Richard Higgins > Ely Cathedral - West Tower and Galilee Porch. The magnificent cathedral at Ely, dedicated to the Holy and Undivided Trinity, lies at the center of what was once a thriving monastic community, first founded in 673 by Saint Etheldreda, a Saxon Queen of Northumbria. The original and a subsequent monastory or two were destroyed during different invasions.

The North and South Transepts, the South Door and the Nave are the oldest existing parts of the current cathedral which dates as far back as the late 11th century. The West End was completed in 1215. The original Norman tower collapsed in 1322 and replaced by The Lantern. The Lady Chapel was built in 1349.
